Chapter 191 In the Shadow of a Little Girl "She was always sporting a ponytail, trailing behind me, eager to share her favorite things. She'd sit by my side as I did my homework. We were inseparable, with a bond that felt innate from our earliest years," he added.
Penelope remarked, "Childhood sweethearts." Much like her and Nathan.
"Exactly," Brandon nodded. "But on her fourth birthday, she vanished, and I've been searching for her ever since. I've never given up." "So, you mean to say that I remind you of her when she was little?" she asked.
"No, you don't look like her when she was a child-she was chubby, you're too thin. But..." Brandon replied, "Your demeanor remindsof her mother when she was young." Everything clicked for Penelope. She invoked the memory of the four-year-old girl in Brandon's heart - a girl now out of reach, whose absence had beca haunting regret for him.
"So, it seems Mr. Walker wants to share withwhat he couldn't give to that little girl," Penelope surmised. "In a way, I'm basking in her light." "It's more than that. Getting to know you, I've realized you're a great person who deserves a better, freer life, not to be chained down by Kelvin, not to have your wings clipped," he said.
Penelope managed a bitter smile. A truth so evident to Brandon was one Kelvin would never understand.
To truly love someone is to let them go, to grant them freedom, to enable them to flourish not to possess them. Brandon went on, "I don't know how she's doing now, but I hope she's happy and that she finds joy... though the chances seem slim. There's nothing more I can do for her, so maybe I can do something for you; it might givespeace of mind." The thought of what might becof a little girl who disappeared at the age of four was chilling. Just pondering the possibilities could send shivers down anyone's spine.
Her family must be suffering terribly, their hearts aching with sorrow.

"But I've heard, Mr. Walker, that you have a fiancée now?" Penelope inquired, "I don't mean that you're obligated to stay single for that little girl's sake. I just thought..." "There's no need to explain; I understand," he interjected. Mrs. Davis, I can tell you that my fiancée is actually the adopted daughter of that girl's parents." Penelope taken aback.
"After losing their child, they were devastated, as if they had aged a decade overnight. Consequently, they adopted a girl of a similar age from an orphanage, and I... I fell in love with her, and we got engaged," he added.
That's how life goes-ever unpredictable.
Only now did Penelope fully grasp the complexity of Brandon's emotions toward her. He had projected all the lost little girl's potential and goodness onto her, wanting desperately to be there for her.
"My fiancée is a wonderful person," Brandon continued, "kind and considerate, and we share a strong bond." Yet, in his heart, the little girl was irreplaceable. To Brandon, his fiancée was a reflection of the little girl. Penelope was another such reflection.
"You deserve the best too." Brandon looked at her. "Miss Cooper, can you now accept my help without reservations? I assure you that I mean no harm and have no ulterior motives." "Thank you for sharing all this with me..." Penelope replied, feeling a bit awkward.
"I feared you might seeas a bad man," Brandon replied. "So I thought it best to be upfront with you, to put your mind at ease." Penelope responded, looking at him, "Mr. Walker, you are so kind." He replied, "I can only hope that the good I do might somehow bless her." The greatest helplessness one can experience is the choice to believe in these metaphysical notions to comfort one's soul.
After parting ways with Brandon, Penelope sat for a long while on a bench in the park, lost in thought.
She had lost her first child, and now she was carrying a second one. But this did not mean she could forgive Kelvin. The pain he had caused was irreparable.
And besides the child, there was the matter of their shared blood feud.

He reached out and gently pulled down her mask, "Your stitches are removed." She answered, "Yes." He tried to assure her, "It'll get better." "I don't care," Penelope said, shrugging off the reassurance as though it were nothing.
"It's like how you don't care about your hand," she said, sarcastically, "What? If I cared about my hand, would you care about your face?" he retorted with a half-smirk.
Penelope frowned, choosing silence over a reply.
"You saw Brandon again," Kelvin's voice dropped, heavy with disapproval. "Penelope, you know that makesangry." She recoiled, rising to her feet abruptly. "You've been havingfollowed?" she stated, upset.
He reasoned, "It's for your protection." "But..." Penelope was about to say something when suddenly...
A chill crept up Penelope's spine. To what extent was this 'protection'? Had someone been shadowing her, even in obstetrics and gynecology? The very thought of Kelvin finding out about her pregnancy sent a surge of panic through her. That news had to remain a tightly kept secret.

It seemed he was clueless about her condition; otherwise, he wouldn't be this composed. "Penelope, I just can't allow another incident like the one with Fiona or what your Grandfather did to happen again."

"I got it," she replied stoically. "Brandon and I just chatted on the sidewalk for a bit, that's all." "Stay away from other men. Including Brandon and Nathan, fresh back from overseas," he said, jealousy flared in Kelvin's eyes.
She retorted, "We're just friends, nothing more. Besides, your history with Fiona should be in question." Before she could finish, Kelvin silenced her with a finger to her lips. "I'm taking you to see Fiona."
A mental hospital was the last place Penelope expected to visit again. Her two years in that institution were E nothing short of a living nightmare! Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream sliced through the air, sending shivers down everyone's spine.
Unfazed, Kelvin gripped Penelope's hand firmly and led her forward. Bodyguards stood in a line, hands clasped behind them, clearing a path.
At the end of the corridor laid Fiona, a bloodied, mangled mess. When she heard their approach, she lifted her head with great effort, her face a ruin except for two haunting eyes. "Mr. Davis... Mr. Davis..." she croaked.
Crawling like an insect, Fiona reached for Kelvin's leg. But as she stretched out her hand, Kelvin stamped it down mercilessly.
A sickening snap-pain and bone fractured beneath his heel. Fiona's raw throat could only manage a strangled, raspy cry.
The scene was too grotesque, too brutal.
Penelope turned away, unable to watch any longer.
"Scared?" Kelvin caught her distress instantly. "Then close your eyes." And with that, he covered her eyes with his hand.
"Why did you bringhere?" Penelope asked.
