Finnian stared at Keith for a while before saying, “Would you mind having a cup of coffee withalone?”
Keith looked at the confused crowd and said loudly, “Alright, lead the way!”
Finnian was the first to walk out. Then, two people stepped forward and said to Keith, “Please!”
Keith glanced at the two of them. They were dressed very elegantly, but their expressions were fierce.
He did not mind at all and followed.
Finnian was waiting for him in the carriage. Keith went in and teased, “I thought you were just a poor scholar. |
didn’t expect you to have such a luxurious carriage.”
Finnian seemed to be absent-minded. He only instructed the carriage to start and ignored Keith.
Along the way, Finnian did not speak. He seemed to be deep in thought, and he was worried.
Keith would not speak either. He only looked out, remembering the way.
The carriage stopped after a while. Keith saw a green brick house.
It was Finnian’s house.
Finnian got off the carriage and said to Keith, “I still don’t know your name.”
“I'm Keith,” said Keith as he got off the carriage.
Finnian just led Keith into the house.
The house was elegantly designed-small yet perfectly equipped
There was a maid and an old woman in the room. The old woman, Halcyon Charlie, seemed to be Finnian’s wife.
When she saw Finnian return, she went forward to welchim.
“Dear, he is my friend. Prepare sfood and wine. I'll drink with him,” Finnian said.
Halcyon smiled and said, “Okay. Take a seat first.”
Then, she said to the maid beside her, “Bring back a bottle of wine. I'll go to cook.”
The maid said, “Yes!”
Finnian invited Keith to sit.

Keith did not drink. He just looked at Finnian and said, “Do you have any questions?”
Finnian slowly slowly unfolded his hand fan and gave it a gentle wave.
In autumn, it was a little cold. However, Finnian was waving his fan, looking anxious.
“Where are you from?” Finnian asked.

“I used to be a guard. Later on, | went into business and traveled everywhere!” Keith replied.
Finnian looked at him. Finnian had seen countless people. He could analyze one’s background from their subtle
expressions and actions.
He believed Keith was not lying, as there was still an air of resolute dignity between his brows-a presence
common among bodyguards.
As for his claim of being a merchant, that too seemed plausible; though his words carried boldness, they were
carefully measured, leaving room for tactful maneuvering.
Finnian went straight to the point and asked, “You just said that the Royal Court never makes things difficult with
Zloimond?”
“Difficult?” Keith sneered. “Not only is it not difficult, it's simply preferential treatment.”
Keith explained the governance measures that the Royal Court had taken over Zloimond and the other
territories.
In the end, he said coldly, “People everywhere say that Kamari is plotting rebellion, but the King refuses to
believe it. | do business in Argentum and have sfriends in the court. “I've heard that many officials have
submitted memorials, accusing Kamari of treason, yet the King has personally suppressed them all, keeping the
matter from reaching the Queen Mother.”
“Really?” Finnian becserious.
Keith said, “It’s absolutely true. If not for your once-honorable reputation, | wouldn't even bother saying this -I
have no desire to invite trouble upon myself. “But you know as well as | do, that the King may trust Kamari now,
but will that trust last forever? Certainly not. In the end, whether he chooses to suppress or pardon him depends
on the King’s mood. “But no matter what happens, it is always the common people who suffer the most.”
Finnian was deep in thought, but he did not say anything.
Keith stood up and said, “I've said too much today. | hope you won't spread what I said.”
With that, he said goodbye and left.
Finnian called out to him, but Keith did not respond and walked straight out.
Seeing that no one following him, Keith turned a corner and went back through another alley. However, he went
to the backyard and crawled on the tile roof. He did not dare to make a sound, afraid that he would alarm others.
About two hours later, a maid led a woman in red into the room.
Keith observed the woman before him-her features were dignified and striking, with bright, expressive eyes.
Dressed in crimson, her fair skin appeared even more luminous, like snow under the sun. There was an
unmistakable air of nobility about her.
Keith thought she was Ashley whom Isolde had mentioned.

“Grandpa!” Ashley bowed to Finnian.

Finnian nodded. He was no longer as gentle as before. Instead, he becdignified. “Sit down. | have something
to ask you.”
Ashley said, “Okay.”
She sat down with a straight posture and a smile on her face. She looked dignified and proper, but no one could
guess what she was thinking.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“You work for the King. Do you know how much taxes Zloimond has paid to the Royal Court over the years?”
Finnian stared at her and asked.
Ashley smiled and said, “The sas the other states and counties.”
Finnian’s expression darkened with anger. “Nonsense! The people of Zloimond have never paid taxes directly to
the Royal Court-they only pay levies to Kamari. “And yet, year after year, the burden of taxes and labor weighs
so heavily on the people that they cry out in suffering. Meanwhile, Kamari publicly claims that these policies
cfrom the Royal Court itself.”
Ashley remained composed, his tone indifferent. “Grandfather, who has been feeding you such lies? Since when
does the Royal Court not collect taxes from Zloimond?”
Finnian retorted, his anger barely contained, “In all fiefdoms, it is the appointed governor who collects local
taxes. This has been the way of the Empire for generations. “Even under the late Prince, taxation was light-
wasn't that evident to all? But because of his great virtue, no one ever questioned his successor, Kamari.”
Ashley shook her head gently. “Grandfather, don’t listen to others. Mr. Conway is wise.”
Finnian snapped sharply, “Return now, pack your things, and cback here. You are not to stay by Kamari’'s
side any longer! I've long suspected his deceitful nature-I never misjudge a man.”
“Grandfather, who ctoday? What did that person tell you?” Ashley asked.
Finnian continued sternly, “You don’t have to ask so many questions. People with ulterior motives can’t hide from
others. If you don’t leave him, you'll suffer with him.”
Ashley looked at him thoughtfully. “Grandfather, | understand what you mean. Is the Royal Court going to attack
Mr. Conway?”
